Toddler Hideout
Every little explorer needs their own headquarters, right ? I find that toddlers love to find little spaces & claim them as their own & this teepee and roadster were no exception for this adorable little guy. Here are a few of my favorites from this outdoor shoot, photographed right here on our property.

Domestic Goddess
I don’t call it Crunchy Glamour for nothing…
Although the name itself suggests a bedroom or dressing space, boudoir photography can be so much more than bedrooms & vanities. A bit of brainstorming & a few jokes led to the accidental conception of this laundry day inspired boudoir shoot. A laundry room may not be the first thing you think of when you think boudoir, but Merriam-Webster defines the word as the following:
Let’s be honest. As a mom, my laundry room has definitely doubled as my “private room” on many an occasion (I’ll take my breaks where I can get them!) This unique set proves not all boudoir has to be brooding; be yourself & most importantly, have fun !
Cloth diaper glam ? Why not ! We keep it real here.

Finally. My little one is old enough to “get” Christmas ! My oldest is 2.5 years old & officially pumped for the holidays. I always tend to be a little snap happy at family gatherings & events, but this year I was super excited to take photos on Christmas morning because I knew this one would be a particularly special one. I was right ! Every year, I learn a little more through trial & error regarding what to/not to do during holiday photos & thought I’d share some of what I’ve learned so far.
- Get down low. Kiddos will most likely be sitting on the floor & looking down a lot. Get on their (eye) level ! The last thing you want are 20 photos of the top of someone’s head; you won’t catch their expressions & may encounter perspective issues or distortion, depending on your lens. And while you’re at it…
- Change angles often. Over the shoulder, from the ground, from high above; there are lots of different ways to capture the spirit of the morning & you should use them all !
- Be prepared to move around. Little ones get really excited & in their own zone & end up all over the place. Seriously, stretch before your kids wake up & set your shutter speed high.
- Tidy up. A big messy shot is essential after the Christmas morning madness, but make sure your point of view will look good from all angles while they’re opening their gifts. A pile of forgotten coats or shoes in the background may not lend to the look you’re going for.
- Don’t be afraid to “stage”. I don’t mean break out the Hollywood clapboard, but set the scene for your best photos. I moved the coffee table out of the living room this year & it made all the difference in being able to capture the mass (and mess) of toys.
- Utilize all those lights ! Spend more than 7 seconds on my website & you’ll realize I love bokeh. Set your aperture low (I used my 50mm 1.4 for a few of the photos above) & you’ll really be able to see the glow & blur of those gorgeous christmas lights.
It was a great day, but I can’t say I’m not glad the holiday hustle is over !
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays !

2×2 stickers from StickerMule
A few weeks back, I had been asked by some of the people from my birth team to host a raffle at one of their upcoming events (an open house/holiday cookie exchange) for a free photo shoot & of course, I accepted. The original plan was to print out an 8×10 & some tickets and call it a day, but now…now I had these cute stickers that were just screaming to be used, so I devised a way to make my presentation a little more memorable.
But first, they had to get the boys’ approval (it passed)
Between my DIY wedding & countless other projects since then, I’ve got TONS of leftover crafting supplies stored away, so I crossed my fingers & entered the craft room in search of some marketing inspiration. I decided to use some brown kraft paper bags to make “gift bags” for each of the attendees of the event.
Inside, I placed picture frames with coupons for a future photo session, a flyer for my business & some holiday chocolate. Simple, yes, but who doesn’t love chocolate & saving money ?

“Picture yourself here!”
$20 coupons for a future photo session
Given that I already had the majority of the supplies on-hand, I spent a total of $22, not counting the cost of the ink used to print the coupons; only a bit more than the $20 minimum cost of a “boosted” facebook post. If you don’t use a facebook business page, a boosted post is pretty much what you have to purchase through facebook if you’re a newer business & want anyone to see your posts. Facebook prioritizes these posts on peoples’ timelines & the feature is basically paying for “advertising” (except not really, because your posts should be able to be seen by the audience of people who like your page regardless & facebook is essentially hiding your content if you don’t pay the extra money to “boost” it, but I digress…) Facebook will also allow you to choose a demographic if you don’t want to prioritize your post on the timelines of people who already follow you; IE., men/women, people in your state, etc.
Kraft bags, scrapbook paper for tags, letter stamps for branding, hole punch…
All in all, it was a good way to interact with fellow members of the natural birth community & to get my work seen by potential clients. They may have very well ended up ignoring my gift bag, but they probably would have ignored a boosted facebook post even quicker. And this was WAY prettier than facebook.
Elf on the Shelf
The Christmas tradition of Elf on the Shelf is not something I, myself, grew up with but nevertheless, I was still super excited to finally start it with my oldest. Our kiddo is nearly 2 1/2 & is finally getting excited for holidays & from the first time I read him the book, I knew he’d be ALL ABOUT Elf

Our kiddo is nearly 2 1/2 & is finally getting excited for holidays & from the first time I read him the book, I knew he’d be ALL ABOUT Elf on the Shelf.
Our first ever Elf on the Shelf
If you aren’t familiar with the concept, here is the description from the manufacturer:
Scout elves are eyes and ears of Santa Claus. Although they cannot be touched, or else they may lose their magic, the elf will always listen and relay messages back to Santa. Taking in all the day-to-day activities around the house, no good deed goes unnoticed; these scout elves take their job seriously. Before the family awakes each morning, their special scout elf will fly back to their home from the North Pole. However, since these elves like to play games, don’t expect to find them in the same spot! While some like to hide in the freezer (probably because it reminds them of the North Pole) and others prefer to sit on the fireplace mantle or hang from the chandelier, these elves love to play hide-and-seek with their families.
Basically, it’s Mom and/or Dad’s job to keep the magic alive & move good ‘ol Mister Elf around the house every night while your kiddo is sleeping. There are still 10 days left til Christmas, but I wanted to post some of my ideas to maybe help inspire my fellow parents. Enjoy !
Rock-climbing wall made from leftover Halloween candies.
Use museum putty to stick without damaging your surface !
We told our kiddo that the Elf would be going to/from his adventures via this tiny door & on this day, he brought some of the North Pole – and a candy treat – back with him.
A bottle cozie/sleeve made the perfect elf t-shirt. I got this one HERE.
We’re obsessed with Starbucks holiday cookies here, so when I found a tray of mini snowman cookies, I HAD to have them, even if they were ridiculously overpriced. I told our kiddo that the elf brought cookies for both of them & he got such a kick out of being able to eat a cookie for breakfast, so meh. Whatever.
He tried decorating his Christmas tree & got tangled in the lights. Relatable. All of the tiny props from this post were purchased from dollhouse suppliers or in the fairy garden isle of Michaels/Hobby Lobby.
I’m running a little dry on unique ideas at this point, so I sewed tiny magnets onto the hands of the elf. Now I can just toss him on a metal surface & call it a day. No positioning, no tying & he can easily get onto high up places like chandeliers & the refrigerator.
I get the feeling he’s going to be spending the rest of his time waiting for Christmas on metal surfaces…
Have fun & be good !
…the Elf is watching.

In addition to the outdoor portraits & headshots, I thought it would be fun to add something a little different than the standard senior photos. My husband was gracious enough to help me in my quest for a more unique senior portrait. Cue the smoke…
This is why you ALWAYS need to test new techniques before attempting them with clients
Ok, so the smoke was somewhat of a disaster. But live & learn ! 3 smoke canisters later, I was able to better control the direction of the smoke & ended up with a portrait I love.
Luckily, the finished product was a far cry from my initial smoke/light test
Unfortunately, the smoke set that I had purchased was not worth the investment. I ordered 7 colors from Amazon, thinking I would be able to use these smoke bombs for at least a few photo shoots, and out of the 7, one was broken, two didn’t activate & one barely let out so much as a tiny puff. As much as I love the effect, I will have to hunt down a different smoke bomb supplier for future shoots. When I find a brand I love, I will be sure to post here so that you can avoid making the same mistake I did.

Magic
Never a dull moment with my two favorite subjects… My oldest, Maxel, is in the toddler stage where all he wants to do is imitate his Dada & it made for some pretty adorable shots. These outtakes from today’s shoot prove that sometimes the best moments are the in-between. “Yaaaaaas…”

“Yaaaaaas…” Looked cute & sounded even cuter
The finished shot isn’t too bad either ! Check out WWE Raw every Monday night on USA Network for more BROKEN / WOKEN goodness. Who knows, you might even spot a mini Matt in the near future…
